When the dance first started, there were no judges or scorecards. Instead, dancers formed a circle and followed a "caller" who would shout out spontaneous moves (like "Truck to the right... Reverse it... Stomp that right foot!"). The competition happened when the caller shouted, "All right, shine!" Dancers would jump into the center of the circle and compete by "shining"—improvising their most energetic, flashy, and dexterous solo moves to attract the most attention. The crowd essentially acted as the judges, cheering wildly and throwing coins from the balcony to the best dancers.
